The creation of "The Night Shift" pt. 1


Near the beginning of this project, I had another person who I was going to work with but eventually left to create their own project; I don't blame them as I didn't have a clear goal for this game.  Such as, what will the gameplay was going to be or how it was going to look like. The original idea was to create a story; a story about an adult leaving home to gain independence, to work, to earn money for their apartment, they wanted their parents to see them thrived being alone but if the player was careless with their spending habits and unable to pay rent, eventually they would move back home to live with their parents meaning a game over. A day and night cycle would've been included where during the day, the player had to work to earn money and, in the night they could either rest, game, work out or eat and they would receive a call from their parents, neglecting your parents would result in them not sending any financial support.  

That was the original pitch for the game with my partner but as you can see, it completely switched to be more of an endless cycle of servicing customers their food. The original pitch was too complicated and confusing with my partner which led to separating to work on our own projects; this separation made me reflected on what type of game I wanted to do.  After searching for my assets, I started with the creation of "The Night Shift" (it was unnamed at first), by working of the player, cash register and creating a line for the customers there were problems along the way such as being hyper focusing on creating a functioning line manager that the customers need to find and file in a single line but this eventually derailed to searching for a random  seat in the restaurant and having the customer sit there.
